Garlic and onion powder (commonly called “garam masala”) is a spice preparation of dry roasted or sautéed whole unpeeled garlic cloves, dried red chilies, cumin seeds and black peppercorns. It can also include other spices such as cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves or fenugreek leaves.

Onion powder is a dry, powdery substance that’s made from dehydrating onions. This can be done in the oven or with a food processor.

Going DIY is quite popular right now! Making your own ingredients in the kitchen has taken on a bit of a fad, and everyone wants to learn how to do it so they can use fewer pre-made products from the market. Making garlic and onion powder at home is fast and simple with this method. The taste is stronger and superior than those found in stores.

The onion and garlic cloves are simply dried in the oven and then ground into a powder to produce it. Similar to how you would use any spice, keep it in the cupboard and use it to season food. You won’t ever need to purchase pre-packaged onion powder from the grocery store again thanks to homemade onion and garlic powder. What’s not to love about intense taste without any additives?

Is There Another Way To Make Garlic And Onion Powder?

Yes! The onions and garlic may be dried in several ways.

Food Dehydrator Use

Place the thin onion or garlic slices in a single layer in the dehydrator (make sure they don’t overlap!) to produce the onion and garlic powder.

At 150°F/66°C, dehydrate. The humidity will determine the time. It might take up to 8 hours if you reside in a humid region, and 4-6 hours in a dry one. You may mix the onions and garlic after they are totally dry.

Air drying is used

Using direct sunshine will allow you to dry the onions and garlic without using an oven or dehydrator. On a baking sheet covered with a kitchen towel, just arrange the onion or garlic slices. For a few days, place in a bright, well-ventilated environment. In dry, hot climates, this technique performs well.

Tips

Add a few grains of rice (or beans) to the jar to avoid clumping. The increased moisture will be absorbed by them, preventing the spice from clumping.

Sliced onions or garlic should be placed on a dish covered with kitchen paper to microwave-dehydrate. until dry, microwave in 30-second intervals.

Place a layer of foil on top or lower the heat if they start to brown too quickly in the oven.

Combine 3 parts salt with 1 part each of onion or garlic to produce garlic or onion salt.

How to Use Onion and Garlic Powder

Instead of using fresh garlic or onion, use the garlic and onion powder. Use in dips, soups, stews, and meat preparations.

How to Keep Homemade Onion and Garlic Powder Fresh

In a cold, dry location (the kitchen cabinet is ideal), keep the garlic and onion powder in an airtight glass container.
